Decide what success means before opening Ads Manager
Write the business outcome in plain language first: more qualified visits to a product page, completed purchases, useful enquiries, app installs, awareness among a defined audience or meaningful engagement. Then decide what observable event would count as progress. An objective is not a label for the kind of advert you want to make; it guides the delivery system towards people likely to take the selected action.
As documented in September 2026, Meta groups campaign creation under six objectives: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales. The names and available performance goals can evolve, and options vary with destination, account setup and placements. Meta's objective guide and Ads Manager prompts are the authoritative place to confirm the current choices. Select the result you want to optimise for, rather than choosing by a vague preference such as 'more exposure'.
Match the objective to the action
- Choose Awareness when the task is to introduce or remind a defined audience about a brand, product or message; select a suitable reach or awareness-oriented performance goal.
- Choose Traffic when the main job is to send people to a destination such as a website, app or messaging destination. A click or landing-page view is not evidence of a purchase.
- Choose Engagement when you want interactions such as video views, post engagement or conversations, using the available goal that reflects the desired interaction.
- Choose Leads when people should submit their details, request contact or complete another lead action. Decide whether the form lives on Meta or on your website and make the follow-up process ready.
- Choose App promotion when the desired action is app installation or another supported app event, with the app and measurement setup prepared.
- Choose Sales when you want purchases or another supported conversion action on a website, app or eligible commerce destination. Confirm that the pixel or other event source is connected and that the chosen event represents real value to the business.
Illustrative example: traffic is not a proxy for sales
Illustrative example, not a forecast: a UK skincare founder wants first online orders. They verify the Shopify purchase event, decide that completed orders are the meaningful outcome and select Sales with a website conversion location and the appropriate purchase event. They make sure the landing page is mobile-ready and products are in stock. A competing idea to use Traffic because it appears simpler is rejected: it would answer whether the ad can attract visits, not whether the offer can convert.
If the purchase signal is not working, the founder pauses to resolve measurement or runs a separately labelled traffic test only if visits are genuinely the question. Results from one optimisation goal are not proof of another.
Write the objective into the experiment plan
Record the campaign objective, performance goal, conversion location, event and business KPI before publishing. State what would count as a useful outcome and what evidence would trigger a change. Review the platform's current Ads Manager guidance whenever Meta revises terminology, and interpret results using store or CRM records as well as Ads Manager. This simple note prevents a low-cost click from being mistaken for a profitable customer.
Outcome → objective → optimization event
Versioned planning checklist: 5 October 2026. Available objectives and events depend on account and current UI; verify in Ads Manager.
| Business outcome | Candidate objective | Selected event to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Orders | Sales | Purchase with correct value |
| Qualified enquiries | Leads | Qualified lead / form submission |
| Landing-page visits | Traffic | Landing-page view, not purchase guarantee |
| Awareness | Awareness | Reach / impressions, not sales |
Common questions
- Which campaign objective should an ecommerce store choose?
- Choose the outcome you actually want to measure. An objective optimising for engagement is not interchangeable with one intended to drive purchases. Check the current options in Ads Manager.
- Can a low cost per click prove that a sales campaign worked?
- No. Check purchases, purchase cost and contribution after advertising. Cheap clicks can still produce no profitable orders.
