How do I prevent the landing page from contradicting my ad?
Audit the hand-off from ad promise to page content so visitors find the product, offer and detail they clicked for.
Trace the click from start to finish
Write down the ad’s product, variant, price or offer, key proposition and CTA. Open the exact link on a phone without being signed in. Can a visitor find the same item and information immediately? If the ad shows a blue lamp but the page defaults to a different finish, fix the variant link or the image.
Treat qualifications as part of the promise. If the ad mentions free delivery, the page should explain eligibility before checkout. Google’s destination requirements and Meta’s advertising standards both address misleading or non-functional destinations; a page that loads is not necessarily a page that answers the ad.
- Open the final URL on mobile.
- Check product, variant and offer consistency.
- Confirm the CTA leads to the promised section.
- Repeat after an offer or inventory change.
Use the page to finish the explanation
An ad can introduce one decision; the page can give dimensions, materials, shipping details and the full buying context. Do not hide essential qualifications until checkout. For a size-focused ad, link near the size chart and make it readable without a pop-up blocking it.
When testing new creative, keep a record of the destination version too. If both ad and page change at once, you will struggle to tell which change helped or hurt the journey.
Returns mismatch → corrected destination
Illustrative exact-snippet comparison. Compare your actual ad and page.
| Ad exact wording | Destination exact wording | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| “30-day free returns” | “Returns within 14 days; return postage payable” | If the owner confirms 30-day free returns are real, correct the destination to “30-day free returns”. Otherwise correct the ad to “Returns within 14 days; return postage payable”. Do not invent terms. |
Common questions
- Can I send every ad to the homepage?
- Only if the homepage makes the advertised item and promise easy to find. A specific product or relevant collection page is often a clearer destination.
