When should I make a creator-led video rather than a static product ad?
Choose between creator-led video and still-image creative according to the question the ad must answer and the evidence you can show.
Choose the format for the message
A short creator demonstration can show a sequence: opening a box, unfolding an item, fitting a component. A static ad can show a comparison, a dimension or one distinctive detail at a glance. Neither format is automatically better. Decide what a shopper needs to see, then choose the simplest format that communicates it.
For a modular desk organiser, a still image might label the included pieces while video shows assembly. Give each asset the same verified product information and destination, then compare the outcomes you care about. Do not call a paid creator clip an independent customer review.
- Write one question the creative will answer.
- Check licensing, creator consent and disclosure obligations.
- Inspect the mobile crop and silent playback.
Keep the creator brief honest
Ask a creator to demonstrate their genuine experience and identify what is supplied, paid or gifted where disclosure is required. Do not script a fabricated “I bought this” story or prompt an unsupported transformation. CAP’s influencer guidance addresses clear ad labelling; Meta’s advertising standards still apply to the resulting creative.
For a simple test, hold the offer and landing page constant. Change the presentation, not the underlying promise. Keep the original files and permissions with the brief so you can revise the ad without losing the source of a claim.
Same mug: creator-led versus static
Illustrative worked example, not a measured customer result. Replace assumptions with checked facts.
| Format | Execution | Permissions / disclosure |
|---|---|---|
| Creator-led | Real creator shows actual handle and mug | Rights, paid-ad disclosure, actual experience; no scripted fake review |
| Static | Same variant and handle close-up with View the mug | Photo license, accurate label and destination |
| Both | Hold audience, offer and CTA constant for comparison | Record owner, territory, duration and editing rights |
Creator-led
Real creator shows actual handle and mug · Rights, paid-ad disclosure, actual experience; no scripted fake review
Static
Same variant and handle close-up with View the mug · Photo license, accurate label and destination
Both
Hold audience, offer and CTA constant for comparison · Record owner, territory, duration and editing rights
Common questions
- Is UGC automatically more trustworthy?
- No. Trust depends on whether the experience is genuine, the commercial relationship is clear and the claims can be supported.
