What changes when I move a Meta ad from Feed to Stories?
Adapt a single product message for Feed and Stories without letting cropping or interface elements hide what matters.
Preserve the proposition, change the composition
A Feed image can leave room for a product detail and explanatory text alongside it. Stories uses a vertical, full-screen presentation; a wide scene may be cropped until the product is hard to see. Recompose the shot rather than stretching it. Place essential information away from interface overlays and check the actual preview.
For a desk lamp, a Feed still could show the lamp in a work setting with the adjustable joint visible. A Story could open with a close-up of the joint moving, then show the full lamp. Both versions should lead to the same relevant page and avoid implying a feature that the item does not have.
- Preview the placement at mobile size.
- Check the opening frame without sound.
- Keep text legible and clear of interface elements.
- Confirm the destination and offer match.
Check the live specification
Meta’s Ads Guide provides specifications by format and placement, and its Stories guidance discusses creative built for the environment. Use those pages when exporting and uploading: available placements and interface details can change. Do not assume an aspect ratio alone guarantees a safe crop.
If you run an automatic placement mix, inspect each rendered preview. A line that reads well in Feed may be cut off or compete with controls in Stories. Make a dedicated variant if the message cannot survive the adaptation.
Paired Feed / Story compositions
Illustrative worked example, not a measured customer result. Replace assumptions with checked facts.
| Area | 4:5 Feed | 9:16 Story |
|---|---|---|
| Subject | Actual mug centered with full handle | Same mug smaller, contained, full handle visible |
| Crop | Leave margin around rim and base | Extend background, do not stretch product |
| Copy | Headline below image | Short message in central region |
| Safe area | Check placement preview | Leave top/bottom clear of illustrative UI; final platform preview required |
Feed · 4:5
Center crop with space for the full handle; headline sits below.
Story · 9:16
Contain the same product; keep copy central and clear of interface areas.
Common questions
- Can I upload one asset for both placements?
- Sometimes, but preview both. If the crop hides the product or qualification, make separate compositions with the same truthful message.
